FAQ…

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a wholistic healthcare system. Practitioners aim to identify the underlying cause of health complaints and treat this rather than just symptoms. They do so by treating the individual as a whole. Natalee draws upon the similarities between naturopathy and rongoā māori which also treats the four corners of health – the physical, mental/emotional, social and spiritual. For different people this means different things. The underlying premise however is to encourage an individual’s innate healing ability by supporting all aspects of that person’s health and well-being. Often this involves educating a person in practices that they can undertake themselves, enabling them the power to best treat and support their own health and well-being.

Not only does naturopathy focus on maintaining homeostasis by treating or removing the underlying cause of the condition but it provides a fantastic preventative health care approach. By implementing the knowledge passed on by the practitioner, clients can move forward in life better equipped to live long, healthy and enjoyable lives. This is an empowering position to be in.

Unfortunately naturopathy sees clients who have experienced a long term chronic illness or diagnosis and they feel they have exhausted other options. Starting out with implementing some simple changes can really illuminate change and hope for such individuals and again can be very empowering.

Naturopathy is a complementary, not alternative medicine – which means a naturopath should work alongside allied and allopathic practitioners, including GPs. The goal of practitioners should be to support their client in identifying and implementing the best treatment plan for that individual. That plan may utilise both naturopathy and allopathic medicine, as both may have important strengths that are essential to that person’s health care.

Scope of Practice

A naturopathic practitioner may be qualified in a variety of different healing modalities and may advise on herbal medicine, nutritional, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle counselling and adjustments as well as homeobotanical and/or homeopathic remedies, essential oils and flower remedies. Some naturopaths may utilise massage and other bodywork therapies.

Naturopaths do not diagnose but do utilise some testing and investigation techniques, these range from standard and functional tests which may include urine, saliva, stool and hair samples, as well as blood through Labtests NZ group.

Some days are better, some days are worse. Look for the blessing instead of the curse. Be positive, stay strong and get enough rest. You can’t do it all, but you can do your best. -Doe Zantamata

Respect your body when it is asking for a break. Respect your mind when it is seeking rest. Honour yourself when you need a moment to yourself.

The Six Founding Principles of Naturopathy

1- First, Do No Harm (Primum non nocere
Naturopathic practitioners prescribe the most non-invasive and least toxic treatments for that particular individual.

2- The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatrix naturae)
Naturopaths recognize the body’s inherent ability to heal itself and support the client to nurture this ability.

3- Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle causam)
Naturopaths aim to identify, address and remove where possible the underlying causes of any disease the client is experiencing or that may be hindering their ascension to optimal health.

4- Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
Rather than fixing a person, naturopaths view their main role as an educator. Their goal is to educate and supporting their clients in personal health management. Their intention is to empower patients to learn how to and to take responsibility for their own health.

5- Treat the Whole Person (Tolle totum)
This holistic concept recognizes the person as an integrated whole not a sum of their parts. Naturopaths aim to treat the patient and their experience of the disease, not the actual disease itself. A naturopath will evaluate and address the nutritional status, lifestyle, family history, physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors in a person’s life.

6- Prevention (Praevenic)
Naturopathic doctors promote a focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.

What to Expect – Initial Consultations

When you book your first appointment you will be sent a confirmation email with a link to a comprehensive intake form. If you could please fill this in at least a day or so prior to your appointment. (Please be aware that the Fertility Intake form is especially lengthy and detailed). If you have any recent blood test result or other test results, it can be beneficial to email these through to Natalee prior to the consultation also.

During your initial consultation you will be asked many questions that will elaborate on the form and the reason why you have booked your appointment. These may include your personal health history, family health history, social and work history; we will also discuss your current diet and lifestyle factors. Initial consultations are usually 60-75 minutes long. During this time, we will discuss a basic treatment plan, a number of dietary and lifestyle ideas as well as nutritional supplements and herbal treatments. We will book a follow up consultation and you will be sent an email with a prescription detailing these, along with any handouts that may be suggested. Another email will be sent with an invoice for the consultation and any supplements that were prescribed. This will need to be paid prior to the products being ordered and couriered directly to your home.

What to expect – Follow up Consultations

Your follow can range from 2-4 weeks after your initial consultation. These range between 30-60 minutes. We generally book 45 minutes and see how much we have to discuss at the time. During Follow ups we review how you are getting on with any changes you are making, how you are feeling generally and if your symptoms have changes or alleviated in any way. We will reassess your treatment plan and current prescription and make any required changes. Again, depending upon how things are tracking we will re-book a follow up consultation, an updated prescription will be emailed to you as will and invoice and any repeat or additional supplements will be couriered to you.

Communication Inbetween Consultations

Natalee is always accessible via email. She may not be able to respond immediately to your query but will always do so in a timely fashion unless otherwise stated. If your query involves a change in symptoms or additional symptom experiences, a consultation may be suggested. As Natalee believes it is better to discuss these things in detail rather than via email or messages where important contributing information may be overlooked and not properly considered or assessed.

How much time do I need for the consultation and what are the costs?

Most health concerns can be addressed during the Initial General Consultation, this consultation costs $120 and is usually 60-75 minutes. An Initial General Consultation for a child (under 12 years old) often takes between 60-75minutes and costs $100.

If you are wanting to see me for an Initial Fertility Consultation, it is best to book a time in which both partners can attend together and put aside 2 hours for this consultation. The cost is $200.

If only one partner is able to attend an Initial Fertility Consultation or if you feel you have a lot to discuss during your Initial General Health, then a consultation may last 75-90 minutes and will cost $160.

Follow Up Consultations are generally booked for 45minutes but can range from 60 to 90minutes (time permitting), these range in price from $60 for 30 minutes, $80 for 45 minutes and from $100 through to $130 for 90 minutes. You will generally be booked in for a 45minutes consultation by default.

Any recommended supplements are an additional cost and will often be couriered directly to your home.

After a consultation you will be emailed your prescription and an invoice. The invoice will need to be paid before any supplements are sent to you.

Liquid herbal prescriptions are sent to local dispensaries, where they will be dispensed and the dispensary will contact you when it is ready to be picked up. Payments for herbs are generally made directly to the dispensary. Other products may be suggested (certain foods, supplemental foods, creams or oils) and these can be purchased from local or online stores.

Please note, that prices of consultations and supplements are subject to change.

What Type of Testing do You Offer?

Natalee has access to a number of different tests depending upon what you are looking for. Natalee often suggests blood testing via labs (she has access to SCL laboratories) and she likes to see any blood test results you may already have.

Regarding food intolerances or allergies, she has access to hair testing and blood spot or blood draw tests, from which she prefers the latter. She also regularly suggests using an elimination diet where possible.

Natalee also uses DUTCH testing for hormones (this involves saliva and dried urine samples).

She also highly recommends microbiome testing and is currently seeking a new and affordable option here.

Natalee is of the belief that it is not always necessary to undergo expensive testing, sometimes through detailed questioning and information gathering underlying causes can be identified and treated.

Natalee tries to make tests achievable for and affordable to everyone. You will only be charged for the test and the time it takes to interpret the results as well as a follow up consultation where you will discuss the results and your individually designed treatment plan.

If you are interested in any other types of testing, please contact Natalee to discuss your options.

How Long Will it Take to Get Better?

This can greatly vary between individuals. Unfortunately, a clear indication as to how long ‘getting better’ will take cannot be given. Just as everyone’s journey to becoming unwell is an individual experience, the journey to wellness will also be unique and time frames will differ. Usually, as achievements are made, consultations become further apart, until such time as a client feels they have gained what they need to for the time being. Often, people will book in again 6-12 months later as a refresher.
